Events at Foxglove Community GardensFor more information on these fun events please call (250) 246-4967 or Email:Summer In The BarnJULY Sunday July 25th. “Making Sense out of Scents” Workshop by world traveler, teacher and founder of Dragonfly Dreaming, Natural Care for Body & Sprit, Beth Lischeron, presents Herbal Scents and what they do for us. The presentation is “fun, delightful, unexpected and interesting”* as Beth discusses the ancient Doctrine of Signatures, herbal remedies, culinary and aromatherapy on both body and mind. As a gift, Beth will create your own personal fragrance. Beth’s earlier workshop held at Foxglove this year was such a success that her students insisted on another workshop in mid- year. Time 10 -4 pm. Cost $80. Includes lunch. *comments made by students AUGUST Sunday August 1st. and 8th. “Art of Chinese Cooking” Li Ping Li was born and raised in China. As a young child her grandfather, a caterer taught her to honour food and the age old customs preparing meals. When Li Ping and her husband moved to Vancouver they opened a “Burger Brother” restaurant in Richmond.
Her friends wanted authentic Chinese food so she began cooking and sharing her grandfather’s recipes. She uses simple fresh ingredients easily found in our local supermarkets and grown in our gardens. If you enjoy authentic Chinese food, this workshop is a must. Cost is $35. per class Lunch included. Time 1:30 -3:30pm Saturday, August 7th. and Sunday 15th. “Back to Basics” Leader in her field of “Back to Basics” cooking, Pat Germschied developed her culinary skills at an early age. Her style of cooking exemplifies the “comfort food” that our grand mothers prepared for us. She has cooked in many restaurants throughout the lower mainland and Vancouver Island, while always being true to preserving the natural colours and flavours of the food. In the first series of classes, Pat will guide you through the sometimes daunting task of turning just ripe berries and fruit into beautiful jams, jellies, relishes and condiments you’ll be proud to serve to your family and friends. Cost is $35. per class and includes all ingredients and canning jars. Time 1:30 -3:30pm August 12th. Coast Salish Native Cuisine The Coast Salish, members of the Pacific Coast First Nations, are noted for their use of dried herring roe, seaweed soup with salmon eggs, and always, the sacred salmon. In this her second class, Coast Salish Native, Gloria Norris, again demonstrates the love she has for her culture. Honouring her ancestral traditions, Gloria will prepare and smoke a salmon using only the freshest ingredients and accompaniments You will learn how to construct a small smoke house suitable for the back yard. Cost is $35 per person. Time from 1:30 3:30.
August 22nd. Coast Salish Native Cuisine The always smiling Gloria Norris a Coast Salish Native, decided to start cooking at the age of 9 when her dad was put in charge of the preparing the families meals. “He burned everything” she said. Her culinary experience started to blossom when she started cooking at the Chemainus Dinner Theatre. Now planning and cooking most of the meals at Oceanview, she gets her inspiration from her daily trips into the vegetable garden. In the first of two classes, Gloria shares her recipe for the Native Bread Bannock and Bar-B-Q Salmon. Cost is $35. per class and includes lunch. SEPTEMBER Sunday, September 5th and 19th “Back to Basics” In this second series, Pat Germschied will introduce her students to “The Art of Soups”. Almost everyone seems to find comfort in a steaming bowl of soup. Remember grandmother’s constant nurturing the kettle of soup she would serve us to cure our colds and fevers? Soups remain the most fundamental kind of nourishment. Pat will share her secrets for making stocks which is the bases for many sauces, casseroles and stews. Then on to full meal soups hearty enough to satisfy anyone- chowders and creamed soups, chilled soups for refreshing the palate, and soups from around the world. Cost is $35. per class and includes ample samples of each presentation. Time 1:30 -3:30pm. Saturday September 11th. and 18th., “The Art of Mexican Cuisine” World renowned cookbook author and chef born in Mexico City, Maria Elena Cuervo-Lorens born in will be presenting her second series of tasting demonstrations and meals at Foxglove Gardens. Her recipes, handed down by her grandmother and mother are featured in the Julia Child cook book “Cocina de la Familia”.
She has attended master classes and workshops given by celebrities, Julia Child and Jacques Pepin and others. Her classes always fill fast and because she limits the class size to 12, it is best to register early. Cost is $80. per class and includes the lunch she prepares. Time from 11:30am to 1:30 pm.
